Somewhere out there, there's got to be a book that makes dodos like me more generally - very generally - conversant about forgotten and arcane aspects of mathematics.

Kinda like Carl Sagen did with Astronomy. But this is not that kind of book. What it is, is deceptively simple.

In the early chapters, as I brushed up on basic algebra, fractions, etc. I'm not THAT big a dummy. In the end, I guess I'm a tough customer, because most of my math questions are perhaps only half about the math.

How do I find the hidden charges on an investment statement? How do I figure the real cost of home ownership vs.

What kind of shell games might a car dealership run with the math in a sales contract? How about a grocery store - is the bigger can always the better value, and how can you avoid taking all day with the math if one shelf label gives the "per ounce" price and the other label is touting "per each?

Most of the handy tables to figure interest, unit conversion, etc. The book is probably way too advanced for someone who doesn't have a solid grasp of basic, everyday math, but slow going for those of us who have long used skills like basic algebra on our own, as part of our day-to-day work, hobbies, or personal bookkeeping responsibilities.

At about 50 pages, a condensed version of this book with the relevant tables and minus the chatty "for Dummies" callout boxes, would make a pretty good purse or man-bag reference.

In the meanwhile, I'm holding onto the page original, even though I inadvertently soaked it the other day with a water bottle.

I saw t his book and had to get it. As I watch my son, 12, travel through advanced math, I was wondering how much practical math gets left behind.

This book is very useful as the title indicates, it is math for "real life. If, as an adult you are thinking this book is not for you, let me continue.

It also covers practical concepts like kitchen calculations, health calculation like BMI, calorie counting, and dispensing liquid medicines.

Further, it gets into personal finance like budgets, investment math, managing mutual funds, and insurance math. Further, it covers math you may use at work such as price setting, profit margins, payroll deductions, taxes.

The book includes activities to build your math skills and keep them sharp. The book is meant as a comprehensive overview of the things we use in everyday life.

You can't buy this book and expect to be a mutual fund wizard, but it helps you understand the concepts and math behind them.

Good reference book to have around. I hated math in school, but loved science. My inability to 'do' the math I wanted has been a problem for me all my life and has interfered with my day to day experiences, all the way to helping me understand the cosmos.

This book won't give you the cosmos, but it will give you just about everything you will need to solve mathmatically in your daily life.

With the internet, we can look up how to solve problems -- but only IF we understand the problem well enough to describe it in a 'google-friendly' manner.

Having a reference book handy that is easy to grab and has a great table of contents and a decent index is surprisingly handy for those specific needs.

It's not just simple math, either. Author Schoenborn begins with a review of elementary mathematics and quickly takes us forward to times when we would do better if we knew how to calculate - shopping, comparing prices, figuring out kitchen conversions, determining how much grass seed or mulch or paint you need, to choosing the best investments, managing your finances, even understanding our taxes.

Schoenborn 'revisits' key principles of algebra and geometry and shows us exactly where they will be most useful in our lives.

Finally, and in some ways most importantly, he explains 'why', not just 'how'. Understanding that is the key to retaining the knowledge, and eventually being able to figure out what the most efficient mathematic path is for all our 'ordinary people' needs.

I love this book and highly recommend it to anyone who wants to unload their 'math-barassment' and gain control of the numbers which affect our lives.

On the whole, I am not a big fan of Dummies brand. There are exceptions, like the fabulous "WordPress For Dummies", but by and large, I don't like the cutesy approach and way too often in my opinion, the writers are not ready for prime-time.

Merci de votre commentaire. Like most of the "For Dummies", this one delivers. Very good book!!!!! Nice math book.

I do wish math people didn't have such swell heads, and would simply make math something more practical and universal that everyone could easily use.

My entire twelve years in public schools I always was wanting math that I could easily understand and use. Math ought to be fun.

It never was. It could be. Excellent refresher book for thos everyday math problems that we take for granted. Charger plus de commentaires internationaux.

I am using it as a teacher so the only thing I didn't like was that it is not in a format with sample problems. Otherwise great content.

As an educator I like to see if a book can be used as a classroom reference. This one is a good one. It simplified the concepts however i wish that there were more examples to practice.

Great arrival time. I purchased three such books under the "Dummies" category in hopes of more instructional material. It was my failure to not read more clearly that the material is "refresher" and not instructional.

This book builds on the solid foundation you already have; it simply refreshes your memory. I would say it is therefore great for those who only need to be refreshed, but not for those who need to actually be instructed.

I could only give this book a very neutral rating 3-stars because I felt it was just too basic and left out subjects that I believe are important topics to be covered in a book on "Math for Real Life".

The general subject of unit conversions is covered by directing the reader to the Internet for conversion factors. There are few topics that are more error prone than unit conversion, even for people who should know this subject cold such as the NASA engineers whose error caused the crash of a Mars Lander.

This topic thus deserves more than a direction to go to the Internet, and I was very disappointed to not to see a better treatment of it.

Another area that is not covered is any math requiring basic trigonometry. This is a very basic and important for carpentry and many other things, such as estimating the height of trees.

While this is a somewhat interesting book, I would estimate that perhaps only one third or less is actually aimed at improving one's math skills, and much of that is extremely basic like adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing.

Much of the material that was not strictly mathematical was interesting, with some interesting tables and definitions.

For instance, inserts discussing the distinction between GNP versus GDP, or tables showing the calorie requirements by age and gender.

There are practical application in the book, like determining the volume of a flowerbed of a given length and width, to be covered by given depth of mulch.

Again, I feel that this is a bit too basic, although determining the required number of bags, containing a given number of cubic yards of mulch, was a bit more challenging.

I also think that anyone who cooks understands that if a recipe was meant for two people you should multiply the ingredients by two in order to enlarge it to feed four.

Avoid making the common math mistakes that can cost you points on homework and exams. Read on to increase yo Calculating percentages can be an easy task.

There are numerous percentage calculators online that can help with task by simply When you perform a hypothesis test in statistics, a p-value helps you determine the significance of your res If all you are interested in is where you stand compared to the rest of the herd, you need a statistic that repor The t-table for the t-distribution is different from the Z-table for the Z-distribution ; make sure y Standard deviation can be difficult to interpret as a single number on its own.
